Short answer: yes. 100% legal, when done right.
Utah marriage law allows couples anywhere in the world to marry online with a valid Utah-issued marriage license, a live Zoom ceremony performed by a Utah-authorized officiant, and official recording by Utah County. That’s exactly how we do it, and it’s the only way we do it.
Where your marriage is recognized: all 50 U.S. states, the U.S. military, and many countries worldwide. It works for U.S. immigration too: USCIS recognizes Utah virtual marriages for green cards and spousal visas, with one stipulation. If you marry from separate locations, you’ll need to be together in person after the ceremony before filing your immigration petition.
Using your marriage abroad? Some countries ask for an apostille or a certified translation. We handle both.
Common questions
Do we need to be in Utah, or even the U.S.? No. Everything happens online, from anywhere.
Can we be in different places? Yes. Different cities, states, or even different countries.
Is an online marriage accepted for a green card? Yes. USCIS recognizes Utah online marriages for green cards and spousal visas. There is one stipulation if you marry from separate locations. You have to be together in person at some point after the ceremony, before you file your petition.
Does an online marriage work for a K-1 fiancé visa? No, and here is why. The K-1 visa is for engaged couples, not married ones. Once you marry, you are no longer a fiancé, so the K-1 path closes. If you are already on the K-1 track, talk to your attorney before you marry, because getting married changes which petition you file.
Is the certificate real? Yes. Issued and recorded by Utah County, Utah, with a digital copy shortly after your ceremony and a physical copy by mail.
